The Bützow prison is according to the enforcement plan of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania primarly an institution of the closed prison for adult male and female prisoners, but also for the execution of pre-trial detention.

The fundamental goal of the correctional system is the resocialization of prisoners. The task of the correctional system is to prepare prisoners to be able to lead independent lives without committing crimes in the future. The prison system is also responsible for protecting the general public from further criminal acts. The legal mandate for this is laid down in the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Prison Act (StVollzG M-V) in sections 1 and 2 of the StVollzG M-V.

Various professional groups are active at the Bützow correctional facility to accomplish this task. Among others, psychologists, lawyers, social pedagogues and officers of the general correctional service work at Bützow Prison.
